Pixl Pet History

Pixl Pets minted out on February 5th, 2022. At the time, the 15000 eggs were of an unknown element. The following day, metadata was refreshed and collectors learned the element of each of their eggs. Shortly after, we also learned that there would be a deity hidden within the 3750 eggs of each element. Deitys are legendary, 1/1 pixl pets that will be among the strongest pets to ever exist. The ability to hatch these genesis eggs was launched on February 18th, 2022.

To hatch or not to hatch? That is the question.

The best analogy for an unhatched egg is an unopened pack of trading cards. As long as the pack remains unopened, it has value based on what the contents could be. If you open the pack and find common cards, then the cards themselves end up having less monetary value than the unopened pack. However, if you open the pack and find extremely rare cards, then your cards end up being worth a lot more than the unopened pack.

Eggs are basically unopened packs of a single trading card. If the pet is common, it has less monetary value than the egg. If the pet is rare, you might break even or turn a huge profit. As of right now, unhatched eggs are (on average) valued a bit more than the least rare pets, but rare pets can be worth a lot more than unhatched eggs.

**I would say that roughly 20% of pets will be worth more than unhatched eggs based on their rarity (see rarity section for details). Another 20% will be worth roughly the same as an egg, and the remaining 60% are worth less than an egg. Unhatched eggs (other than the fire eggs) are typically sold at 10% above the floor price.

The game theory of hatching a deity:

Fire eggs sell at a premium relative to other eggs because the deity that hatches from the fire egg is the only deity that hasn't been hatched. One would expect that this premium will only increase as more eggs are hatched because the pool of eggs that could contain the fire deity will get smaller. So holding onto a fire egg might be a good investment but it's a risky play. As soon as the fire deity hatches, this premium will collapse.

** Currently, there are 1,422 unhatched fire eggs. This means that any given fire egg only has a 0.07% (1 out of 1422) chance of being a deity. Fire eggs are selling for ~30% higher than eggs of other elements.

That said, holding onto an unhatched egg for many months or years may be a viable longer-term strategy for retaining value. Even if it can't hatch a deity, the novelty of egg hatching and low number of remaining unhatched eggs from the genesis collection could make them desirable for collectors. We've seen this phenomenon in trading card game packs: old, unopened packs trade as if they're full of rare cards. In this case, I expect all genesis pets (even the most 'common' ones) to have immense value one day, so whether they're hatched or not, I think you'll be happy you kept them for years to come.

Hatching is optional & involves a gasless transaction. To hatch your genesis egg, go to the official website () and connect your wallet containing the egg. Once your egg is hatched, it's hatched forever.
